Bundian Way - Sapphire Coast NSW

About
the Bundian Way

The Bundian Way is a shared history pathway between Targangal (Kosciuszko) and Bilgalera (Fisheries Beach) that connects the highest part of the continent and the coast via an ancient Aboriginal route.

In 2010, the Eden Local Aboriginal Land Council was successful in gaining funding from the national Indigenous Heritage Programme to survey the Bundian Way on foot and identify the route and its Aboriginal landscapes.

After very considerable consultations and historical research, the survey team of up to five Koori personnel walked the 335km length of the Bundian Way in legs of up to 8 days starting on 11th October 2010. Due to the regularity and quantity of evidence (including artefacts) along the way, it became clear that the Bundian Way should be regarded as a single site.

In 2013 the NSW Government officially recognised the Bundian Way’s cultural, historical and wilderness significance with a Heritage listing.

The Bundian Way exists though the ongoing efforts of the Eden Local Aboriginal Land Council, and with the assistance of a host of volunteers, groups and agencies such as National Parks & Wildlife Service, State Forests, Bega Valley Shire Council, Snowy Monaro Regional Council, Aboriginal Affairs NSW, South East Local Land Services, Delegate Progress Association and more.

Become a friend of the Bundian Way

Finding, walking and mapping the route has been the focus of the Bundian Way Project for over 10 years, however there is much work required in formalising this route as a modern walking track open to the general public.

The Bundian Way has developed into an innovative tourism, cultural and shared history project, that not only promises economic benefits to the wider region, but is a valuable asset in creating employment opportunities for local Aboriginal people.

The Eden Local Aboriginal Land Council and its partners have worked tirelessly towards creating public infrastructure for the walk, however volunteers can only achieve so much. If you would like to become a Friend Of The Bundian Way, by donating much needed funds, or by assisting on a voluntary basis, please contact us at: info@bundianway.com.au
