The landscape of my homeland has changed since the arrival of the white men. We showed the white men where to find water for their strange, large animals, and the sheltered grasslands. We showed them ways to cross the country.

This country of undulating hills and golden grasses provides us murrnong (yam daisy) to eat. We restore balance by replanting them, but first we burn the country to cleanse it in readiness to give back what we have taken.

The ancestors call us and we answer their invitation to journey through Maneroo (Monaro) country for Bogong moth season. The Bogong are nesting in the dark crevasses of the high country’s solemn watchmen, rocky outcrops of Targangal (Mount Kosciuszko).



The power of Gudu

I sit here beside Gudu the ocean, and watch the light glimmer and sparkle on the water. The sea breeze wraps around me and I am reminded of the stories the old people have told me, about Gudu, and how we have been here since the country changed from warm to cold and back again.



Becoming Beowa

We Beowa the killer whales and ancestors of the Katungal (saltwater people), are hunting Jaandas – baleen whales like humpbacks. The Jaandas travel in great numbers along the coast with their calves. This season we are helping the men who ride over the waves in wooden boats hunt the Jaanda.



Our ancient journey

We rise before Gugunyal (kookaburra) wakes to lead the morning bird song. Soon we will leave Turemulerrer for Maneroo, and the Bogong moth ceremonies of Targangal. As we travel the Bundian Way our ancestor spirits sing to us. For thousands of years, since the Dreamtime, this has been the way, taking care of our land, connecting country, taking care of each other.
